Égalité for All: Toussant Louverture and the Haitian Revolution
Wednesday, January 20 at 8-9pm on WGBH World
Thursday, January 21 at 8-9pm on WGBH 44
The Haitian Revolution was the only successful slave insurrection in history. Its
leaders grasped the full meaning of French revolutionary ideas and used them to
create the world's first black republic. The event elevated a black general,
Toussaint Louverture, to such international fame that admirers ranked him on par
with George Washington. The movement has been called the birth moment of universal
human rights. Vaguely remembered today, the Haitian Revolution was a hurricane at
the turn of the 19th century, traumatizing Southern planters and inspiring U.S.
slaves. Égalite For All explores this history through music, voodoo ritual, powerful
re-creations and the comments of insightful writers and historians.
Failing Haiti
Wednesday, January 20 at 9-10pm on WGBH World
Thursday, January 21 at 9-10pm on WGBH 44
Haiti, a nation forged by a slave rebellion 200 years ago, briefly appeared to
emerge from oppression and dictatorship with the return of charismatic priest
Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2000. Yet today, Haiti remains caught in a tragic,
downward spiral. Failing Haiti examines the international community's efforts to
rebuild the Caribbean country's economy and impose democratic values. Through the
perspective of two administrations' handling of Haiti, Failing Haiti unravels the
violent events leading to the 2004 ouster of President Aristide. Key players,
including deposed government officers, insurgents and U.S. embassy officials discuss
Haiti's recent history with the United States, a history marked by political
intrigue, corruption, drug smuggling, power struggles, covert militias and a
seemingly endless series of policy blunders.
